Few of us like to floss every day, and many just end up skipping the step. But what if you found new ways to floss instead?
Flossing helps take off the sticky film that contains bacteria called plaque from between your teeth. Regular flossing will reverse and prevent gingivitis, keep bacteria at bay, and freshen your breath. Today, there are several flossing options that help clear plaque and food from in between your teeth.
Here are some of the pros and cons of all the different ways to floss.
Interdental Brush
A proxy or interdental brush is coned shaped, has a plastic handle and a small head of bristles held together by a wire.
Advantages:
Makes interdental cleaning easy and gets under the pontic portion of bridges too.
Effectively removes plaque.
A steady alternative for those with limited mobility who can’t hold the floss.
Disadvantages:
Difficult to maneuver the brush in tight spaces and places where teeth are crowded together.
Expensive when compared to string floss.
String Floss
Most commonly used, string floss is available in both waxed and non-waxed formulas and a range of popular flavors. It is usually more manageable because it slips between teeth effortlessly.
Advantages
Quick and easy to do anywhere.
Effectively removes plaque.
Inexpensive and travel-friendly.
Easily available.
Disadvantages
Not easy to reach the back of your mouth.
Can hurt your gums if misused.
Difficult to use with braces.
Not reusable.
Water Flosser
This cleaning device shoots a thin stream of water between your teeth or the gum line to remove debris.
Advantages:
Easy to use even with braces and bridges.
A good alternative for those with limited dexterity.
Massaging action can improve gum health.
Easily clean hard-to-reach areas.
Disadvantages: There is a definite learning curve.
Expensive and space-consuming.
Requires electricity and water.
Hard to use outside of your home.
Not as good at removing plaque, unlike string floss.
Finally, dental picks, a plastic tool with a U-shaped end that holds a piece of dental floss, are also popular. While many people use it to just dislodge food from between the teeth, some also floss with it. But as they have no bristles, you cannot use these as a replacement for proper flossing.
